A Glimpse Into Fuller Gardens...North Hampton NH - Part One

A Glimpse Into Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH - Part One

One of my favorite places to visit on the Seacoast is Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH. Located at 10 Willow Avenue off scenic Route 1A (Ocean Boulevard), Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH is the ornamental garden Massachusetts Governor Alvan T. Fuller created for his wife, Viola, at their summer estate, Runnymede-by-the-Sea.

This 2 1/2 acre property is a true turn-of-the-century  estate garden. Although Runnymede was dismantled in 1961 per the wishes of Alvan, the ornamental gardens remain. Fuller commissioned the design and construction of these famous ornamental gardens in the 1920's under the direction of award winning landscape architect Arthur Shurtleff. Today, maintenance of the estate gardens is done under the auspices of the Fuller Foundation of New Hampshire, founded after Fuller's death in 1958.

In 1938, at the request of Alavan T. Fuller, Cherry Hill Nurseries designed and installed the "side garden," a rose garden in the shape of a wheel with grass walkway "spokes" dividing beds of exquisite roses with an antique well head at the center.

The "front garden" was designed and installed by Olmstead Brothers of Boston and intended by Fuller to be more of a showpiece for passers-by, and could be viewed from the Fuller's second floor bedroom across the road in Runnymede-by-the-Sea. This is my kind of guy! What a romantic!

Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH is open to the public during the blooming season. A nominal fee is requested to help the Foundation maintain the estate. If you should stop by for a visit, you will be greeted by a warm and enthusiastic staff and welcomed to let yourself be transported to another time. Please do!

This is the first in a series highlighting Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH. As the season warms and the flowers bloom, I will be back with more photos of this extraordinary seaside gem. BTW, during the month of May, Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH offers perennials for sale at reasonable prices. Despite the chilly temps, my Chris and I visited and picked up some new perennial offerings for our gardens!
