Our First Mission As Members of the New Hampshire Patriot Guard Riders

Yesterday I wrote about the dedication ceremony I attended for the New England Gold Star Mothers.  What I didn't tell you was that Rick and I attended the ceremony as members of The Patriot Guard Riders.  It was our first mission, and it was a very humbling and emotional experience.

Patriot Guard Riders

The Patriot Guard Riders are motorcyclists who, at the request of a family, will gather and attend the funeral of a fallen American hero.

The group was originally formed to provide protection from protesters.  The riders, holding American flags, form a human wall and shield the mourning family from the hateful people trying to disrupt their service.

Membership is free.  They "don't care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you're a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you're from or what your income is; you don't even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect."

The groups presence at the dedication ceremony was impressive...I felt honored to be part of it.

How could somebody disrupt mourning services? I wish The Patriot Guard Riders wouldn't bee needed for such protection.

Sharon, your post almost made me cry as I could imagine how you must have felt.  I've seen those awful protestors on TV and it is simply hard to believe that anyone could be so cruel to another human being during one of life's most difficult moments.  Good for you that you have decided to get involved.

The Patriot Guard Riders has a great sense of purpose and very honorable intentions. It has to feel really good to be part of New Hampshire Partriot Guard Riders.

Good luck and success.

Sharon, how awesome! What a wonderful thing to do! Like Chris, I cannot understand why anyone would protest at such an event, but I'm glad you were there! The news cast was very touching. My heart swells to think of you there, holding your flag... thank you for sharing.

Sharon--You are such an amazing woman!  One wonderful surprise after another!  This makes me want to be a rider---but I am due for a new car and do not think I can afford both a bike and a car. So you are saying I could participate in the flag holding even without a bike?  This is such an important service these bikers are providing!!

Kathy:  One way or another we will get together someday and I can't wait to meet you in person!

Anna:  In a perfect world their service wouldn't be needed.  I don't understand how those people can disrupt a family's grief like that.

Chris:  It was very emotional...it was not a funeral, not sure how I will do then, but many "mothers" were present and several spoke.  It was my husband who actually joined the group, but I will join him on as many missions as I can.

Lou:  Well I've never felt so patriotic in my life as I did standing there holding that flag!

Peg:  Words just can't describe the feelings.  The ride was awesome too...weather was perfect, it was cool like Fall.

Pat:  You don't have to be a rider.  You should google to see if there is a chapter near you and contact them to get on a mailing list to be notified when they have a mission.  I'm sure they would love to have your support.

Peter:  When I was looking for a youtube video to include I learned more about just how patriotic and giving these people are.  It's a wonderful organization!

OMG Sharon! This is a wonderful group. I suggested it too. Does it have to be in NH only? You should be very proud to be part of this "Riders".

Sharon,

What I love about this post is the golden nuggest of RESPECT!  Carl Rogers, the eminent psychologist main statement of how to treat all people (regardless if you agreed or not) is "Unconditional Positive Regard" regardless.  We love that,!  Thanks for sharing this, we appreciate it.  A

Lydie:  It's national, not just NH.  I'm very proud of my husband for finding the group and signing up.

Alexandra:  It's all about RESPECT.  I love that some of the biggest, scariest dudes dressed in leather and covered with tattoos are brought to tears when they speak of it.
